Col Christopher W. Bates, a KC-46 pilot-physician, serves as Commander of the 10th Medical Group and Command Surgeon at the U.S. Air Force Academy, overseeing care for tens of thousands of beneficiaries while also leading the International Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots and advising on human-systems integration for tanker operations. Col Christopher Backus, now the USTRANSCOM Command Surgeon, has led large joint and coalition patient-movement readiness efforts—such as Ultimate Caduceus and other aeromedical-evacuation exercises—and serves as a key voice on how physicians underpin global mobility and readiness. At Wright-Patterson AFB, Col Benjamin Park continues clinical and aerospace-medicine support at USAFSAM, contributing to the operational flight-medicine mission and training environment. Lt Col Sandra Salzman, a C-130J pilot-physician, has been a public leader in both operational integration—supporting exercises like Astral Knight in Europe—and in mental-health policy reform, helping drive the change that now allows USAF aircrews to continue flying while seeking behavioral-health care, and advancing aviator peer support through MAPS presentations. Maj Matthew Sandridge has combined aerospace medicine and operational test work with high-visibility performance in the Air Force Marathon “Fly! Fight! Win!” challenge, Lt Col Jonathan Beich has contributed to cutting-edge research on suicidality and clinical natural-language processing that informs military mental-health care, and T-6 instructor pilot Dr Andrew Pellegrin continues the pilot-physician tradition in family medicine after an early career as a Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training FAIP. Pilot-physicians are simultaneously advancing clinical care, operational readiness, human-systems integration, and mental-health innovation for the Air Force in 2026.

AsMA Conference 1-6 June 2025
Panel Theme: The Fast and the Curious: Charting New Frontiers in Aviation Medicine.
- Join the International Association of Military Flight Surgeon Pilots discussing forward leaning research on optimizing human performance in aviation as well as case studies of their application. As mechanical airframes push the boundaries of speed, endurance, and agility, it's crucial to understand how the human body and mind can keep pace with the evolving mission set. With an eye on both ops and medicine, IAMFSP will explore cutting-edge strategies in aviation medicine, from enhancing cognitive function to improving physical resilience, ensuring that the operators of tomorrow's aircraft can handle the intense demands of high-speed missions. Don’t miss this chance to hear from those uniquely qualified to merge flight expertise with medical innovation!
